Jim, I agree in part. Taking the bike to your local bike shop to pack works well. They have the boxes, protective packing material ,and the experience to pack you bike and get it to your destination safely. They're going to do it right because they have a relationship with you. The problem I've had, early in my bicycling experience, is shipping the bike home. Now I'm using a bike shop that doesn't know me and will probably never see me again and depending on the person packing the bike (probably the newest kid on the payroll) it can be a negative experience.
