Thanks. I'd like to hear from others on this topic.

I ride 70 - 75" gears unladen, but then I tend to push hard and ride short
distances. I intend to try a small gear and try twiddling it for a longer
ride some nice day, soon, God willing, and see how that goes. I find it
very, *very* strangely hard to rid myself of the "gofast, racer" mindset,
even though I never raced (but I first became seriously interested in bikes
about the time Merckx was coming into his own and he and ilk formed my
attitudes), and it is strangely hard for me not to think that riding a small
gear "doesn't count". Weird psycho compulsion.

It is for this plan that I'd like to hear what low gear might serve well. I
do have a 17/65" on the flip of my commuter and perhaps I should start with
that.
