Jim:

Do you recall the old FD shifters that were actuated by a rod mounted on the
seat tube, with a small knob to grab?  IIRC correctly it was a simple
rotation to shift.  That gave way to matching DT levers probably early 60s.
But was elegant & simple, and would look good on your bike, especially if
you have only occasional need for a front shift.

In any case, I'd definitely add a granny for this trip.  There's a lot of
wrinkles in the landscape out here.

At one point, I had a 26t inner chainring, featuring derailleur-less
manual shifting. I will probably reinstall a granny before I come to
CA, just in case we/I do Palomar observatory or some other grinding
climbs.
