I say go for it. My commuter wears the big Wald basket from Riv zip
tied to an old Blackburn rear rack. I found a small carry-on bag on
sale at REI that fits perfectly and holds just enough for my day. The
load is high and back, but I don't carry enough weight in the bag to
upset the bike's handling, just a change of clothes and maybe a small
Thermos of coffee. A small rack trunk on a fronk rack carries a lock,
spare tube, tools, the battery pack for my home-brewed LED headlights,
granola bars to fuel the ride home and such that stay with the bike
all the time. I have secure parking in a fenced and guarded lot at
work, no theft worries. I like the grab-n- go convenience of this
setup.

Last year I commuted on 700c Vittoria Randonneur Pro tires. This year
I will be on 650b's, and I wish there was an equivalent 650b tire -
reasonably low rolling resistance, good puncture protection and
reflective sidewalls in a nominal 37 mm / actual 34 mm width. I'll
pass on the Speedblend sidewalls, thanks. For now, it's CdlV's for
the commute.
