I was commuting on my 61cm Bleriot with a medium sized messenger bag secured to the front rack, which handled really nice, but my commute is bi-modal. Securing and removing the bag got to be a hassle.
I tried a large Wald basket on an old Blackburn Mtn rack, but with clothes, lunch, laptop, books, shoes ... it was too much weight; the tail wagged the dog. Now using Ortlieb Plus panniers, which work much better with a bi-modal setup. Snap, snap, and the valuable stuff is onto the bus or into the office. Recently went plush with a Bruce Gordon rack; all very nice. http://www.flickr.com/photos/sea-fisherman/3206194487/in/set-72157610326961535/ I'm with Patrick: Parnniers, for me, are by far the best solution for overall handling, ease of use, aerodynamics, reflective visibility, etc. Anybody looking for a large silver Wald with a Blackburn Mtn rack? Of course, my wife still swears by her rear basket on her 49cm Bleriot, but she's not commuting with twenty plus pounds ...
