The Hilsen is more expensive than the Hillbourne because it is made in
small US and Japanese craft shops as opposed to large factories.
Electronic shifting is expensive because it is adding a machine driven
component to a manual driven device.

Technology does not bore me. I buy top of the line lap tops and cell
phones almost every other year. My apartment has a tankless water
heater, all LED lighting, and I can let the cleaning people in
remotely from my cell phone. Electonic shifting on bicycles bores me.

As I say above, electronic shifting to me brings the bike to close to
being a moped. What makes biking beautiful is the melding of human
and machine. If all you want to do is to go fast on two wheels, go to
a spin class or buy a scooter.

On the other hand, technological advances such as say, improvements in
metalurgy to help make internal hubs, tires, brakes, handlebars,
stems, etc. lighter and more durable without being ugly, fascinate
me.

My lack of enthusiasm for electronic shifting does not make me a
luddite. Just someone who thinks advances that reduce the person bike
symmetry defeat the purpose.
