Last week Jim Thill posted that he finally completed a 200k on his Atlantis.
First congrats to Jim on that. About the same time I read the post my LBS
called and said the Phil Wood bottom bracket On my Rambouillet was toast and
would need to be sent out, turn around time 2 weeks. There was only one week
to the BBS 200k. Rain was predicted for the day of the ride and I only had two
working bikes with fenders, The QB and the Atlantis. I haven't been trainning
enough but I have been doing it on the QB. For a fleeting minute I thought
about using it but then I recalled how sick the hills can be on any brevet so
the Atlantis got the nod.

I don't ride the Atlantis much. I got a sweet deal on the frame several years
ago and built it up for touring so it mostly looks good hanging up in the
garage waiting for the cross country trip I am promising my self in a few years
when I turn 55. I trainned on it for a couple of day to make sure everything
was good and then loaded it on the car rack and headed off for the brevet. I
was in full Riv mode with shelacked and twined handlebars, a Boxy Baggins and a
Little Joe. Oh yeah the bike also sports toe clips so I was in shoes without
cleats.

The bike worked out just fine and I was glad I had it instead of the QB. Since
it was set up for touring it had a 46/36/26 tripple and a 12-34 7 speed
freewheel in the rear. The first third of the ride was fine all done in the
middle and upper chainrings. The middle third had some long grinding climbs
and my lack of trainning showed. From the half way point of the ride on I
needed that small chainring when ever the road would get steep. I kept a
reasonable pace and spun a low gear and made it to the end in 11 hours even. I
enjoyed riding that Atlantis but the Rambouillet will remain my brevet bike.

One thing I noticed was the the Atlantis felt heavy. I ride a 61cm atlantis
and a 62cm Rambouillet. I weighed the Atlantis when I got home and found it
weighed a touch over 28lbs. This is for the bike, nitto bag rack, SKS fenders,
no pump, no bags and no water bottles. The build is all Suntour XC Pro so
there is nothing heavy weight there. But the wheels are CR18's and 37 mm
Paselas. For a big touring bike with heavy tires I did not think that 28lbs
was too bad. I am curious not to see what the Rambouillet weighs when I get it
back.

Still recovering but looking forward to my next ride.
