Have yet to read the book, but am a big sardine fan. Local place near me
has a t shirt that says "sardines are not for sisses"  (I kid you not) and
serves them on a salad with slices of gruyere and roasted red pepper on top
of bibb lettuce. Me, I will eat them with whatever pickles I have on hand
(last night was fennel. mmm.)
