A stiff sole should help you on the longer rides. I wear a pair of Teva hiking
shoes. I don't see my style on their website anymore but it's similar to this:

http://www.teva.com/men-shoes/surge-mid-event%C2%A0/1005764.html?dwvar_1005764_color=BLKO#icid=mnav_viewall&start=11&cgid=men-view-all

Keen makes similar shoes and I had them before and liked them. I also use the
Keen sandals in warmer weather. They have a nice stiff sole too.
