Tips to keep mud and slime off the bike: 1) fenders 2) mud flaps 3) wash the
bike afterwards.

Ease of mounting fenders is largely in the hands of the bike designer:
improperly placed bridges will make getting a good fender line difficult. Some
Rivendells are good in that respect -- my Saluki fendered easily -- but I've
seen others (a friend's Atlantis comes to mind) where the chainstay bridge was
so far from correct she had to use the full length of a wine cork to space the
fender. Do make sure you have adequate clearance.

Perhaps we should have a thread about bike washing techniques. I use the
two-bucket method, something I read in a bicycling magazine once many years
ago.

sounds like you bought a custom-for-you bike right off the shelf

In 40+ years of cycling, I never thought I'd buy something sight unseen without
even a test ride. And I never thought I'd buy a mixte.

But I've never read a word of complaint or buyer's remorse about Rivs. The love
owners seem to have for these bikes is unusual, so I decided it was worth
parting with nearly $3K of my hard-earned dollars to get the Chev. I could have
thoroughly pimped out a Clementine for much less, but I totally fell for the
lugs, the lines, and the whole package.

I'm in my early 50's, live in Virginia, and ride for the pure joy of it on
paved paths and gravel trails. I'm all for beusage, but want to keep the
occasional mud and slime off the important parts. Any tips for how best to keep
it un-crapified?
