Another proposed solution:

Bart across the bay, and ride the rest.

SF to Walnut Creek is $4.75 (one way).  SF to West Oakland is $2.90.
Riding from West Oakland to Riv is no more than 17 miles. While you're
out there, ride up the mountain and make a day of it!
