Interesting subject. Jim, thanks for the heads up on the book. I share the
notion that there are parallels between analog audio vs. digital, friction
vs. index shifting and automobile manual vs. automatic transmission.
Happily this is not an either/or situation. For "serious" listening I enjoy
vinyl however I appreciate the convenience of digital audio and the sound
quality of digital audio is steadily improving. High resolution audio files
with a solid reproduction chain sound pretty darn good and lack the
distraction of hiss, clicks and pops. I find friction shifting and the use
of manual transmission to be more satisfying than index shifting and an
auto transmission. I also appreciate that in the event of a damaging mishap
I am less likely to find the shifting mechanism MIA with a
friction-shifting bike. I enjoy an old stick shift sports car. It fosters
and rewards driver involvement. It is a fun car to drive. Would I want to
use it for daily commuting/errands? Not really. Here the convenience of an
automatic makes sense. (BTW I use a bike for transportation but there are
times when the use of a car makes more sense. This is another instance
where, depending on personal circumstances, there is no need to choose one
or the other exclusively.)
