Bike theft is mostly a matter of time and place. No one will be sawing at your lock while you're in a suburban Starbucks; but if you're a student, or work in an ER at night, or like to bar-hop by bike, things happen. It could even be taken from your locked garage while you're on vacation. I think you have to be accept the idea that it could be stolen, and that if so, you'd replace it, with the aid of insurance money. Until you accept that reality you'll always be on edge.
So ask your insurance agent about coverage. Your policy may or may not be "replacement cost" and you'd need photos and receipts to back up a claim.
