Laing - yes, that's exactly how I set my XD2 wide/low up, with an old Campy 
Record FD.  It just barely works, though.  I had to position the FD low 
enough on the ST to avoid the kind of interference problem that Lum Gim is 
experiencing, but high enough so that the tail end of the derailleur cage 
doesn't smack into the right chain stay.  With that set up, your maximum FD 
movement just covers the 28T chainring out to the 40T wide one.  Oh, and 
with the FD lower down like that you have to be careful when adjusting the 
throw so the cage doesn't smack into the bash guard when moved all the way 
to the right.  I took me several trial and error attempts to get it right.
