Mitch: You probably haven't damaged the FD; they're pretty rugged. Check your limit screws and take a look at Sheldon's info on chain length & set-up. With a long cage RD, I never found chain length to be critical but it shifts better if it's reasonably close. I've dropped the chain off the granny gear when I mess up the big to middle shift & am out on the smaller cogs, probably not enough chain tension. Over shifting that tosses the chain beyond the big ring is probably a limit screw adjustment. Sometimes with a new build it takes a while for things to settle in. Helps to check stuff for a while after.
