Bruce, I have a Shimano HG-61 12-36T cassette which is supposedly beyond the official blessing of Shimano for my long cage XT RD but blessed by Riv. I doubt I'll ever use the 36 but it's on there. I sized the new chain (SRAM 9xx) with the conventional approach and didn't remove any links because it seemed to be the proper length uncut. The odd thing is that it's been shifting fine though the chain is starting to gunk up a bit from daily use. I lube chain with Boeshield once a week and let sit and then wipe off thoroughly. I bought a 3rd eye but never installed it ..... I may now.
