I do have to admit to a few years (well, precisely mumble-mumble....) running 23 ish tires at "Max Plus" pressures. I'm definitely comfortable on a bike running higher pressures. I also really, really try to avoid pinch flats. On a few of my regular romping areas, the sharp-edged rocks begin to surface this time of year as things become drier and dustier. Those things tend to make me keep my pressures higher. I'm in the 185 neighborhood, and on the other day's commute on the Hilsen (with maybe 5 pounds o' gear in the saddle bag and another few in the shoulder bag), I was deep into a ripply 180-degree turn on the pavement and got a bit of "hobby-horse" movement (fore-aft) in addition to feeling the rear tire move a bit laterally. Got through the turn just fine, but it was a little more movement than I like. On the pump gauge, it turns out the pressure on the rear JB/Green was ~40. A bit too soft for me, my topography, my inerent cornering feedback system. My indirect point is that tire pressure is definitely a range, and one of the most important things is to select a setting that allows enough deflection for comfort and maximal tire patch on the ground, while letting the rider stay relaxed. Yesterday, same turn, a trifle higher speed, ~80 pounds. Felt like I could have been sitting up, reading a book while going through the turn. But, again, that's me and what I'm used to. I don't think I get tense until it's under 40, and even then, if I did it every day, that might soon seem normal. Don't know if this anecdotal stuff is helpful, but, hey...no one else was using the keyboard right now. - J -- Jim Edgar [email protected] Cyclofiend Bicycle Photo Galleries - http://www.cyclofiend.com Current Classics - Cross Bikes Singlespeed - Working Bikes Gallery updates now appear here - http://cyclofiend.blogspot.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group.
