I'm getting off-track here, but the point is, the 650B bikes don't seem to be able to compete against the 700s.

Bingo. 650B is a "weird" even unheard-of size for 99.163% of the US bike-buying public. People will be afraid they'll be stranded with a bike they can't get tires for. It's different than their buddies ride. Etc. And 61.371% of the bike buying public doesn't specifically want fat tires. 86.413% believe fatter tires are necessarily slower down the road than skinny tires and are thus opposed to things like 650B. Most everyone, given a choice, will pick 700C or 26" MTB-size wheels

Until Trek/specialized/Cannondale start offering 650B bikes, it is and will remain a tiny niche even among the outliers like RBW folks. It's a useful niche for some, could be useful for many, is not ridden by most and vehemently opposed by a handful.

Kudos to Grant & Co for their dedication and persistence; they have added to the lives of hundreds, maybe thousands, by reviving 650B and bringing it attention in the marketplace.
