Our brevet society is fairly new (2008?). And one needs to be a member of the Twin Cities Bicycle Club ($25 a year) to join. And yes, I usually state will not join a club that would have me as a member. (Do believe they also highly encourage RUSA membership, although that is not explicity stated on their page.)
The fact I don't "fit in" with the local establishment of riders is a secondary issue.
