Hardly a "Riv specific" topic, but admittedly fun.

I found a guy on Craigslist who bailed out on a home-built recumbent project. He'd built half the frame and bought all the parts NEW. He sold me the whole batch for $50. Must be $500-$600 worth of parts (wheels, crankset, disc brakes, derailleurs, shifters, chains, on and on...)

I still have all of it...

Here's a question for everyone: What's your best cycling deal of all time? I'll
start with a few recent examples of great stuff that I got for close to nothing
or … nothing:

-- My late 60s Raleigh Superbe, purchased at a yard sale for $5. A day's worth
of elbow grease (washing, scrubbing, and polishing) turned it into a very nice
looking bike. I had to spend about $10 to buy a missing part, and I bought a
used Brooks Flyer to replace the awful modern saddle the bike came from. Also
put on a Carradice bag that I already had. Similar bikes show up on eBay for
about $500.

-- The Sigma computer on my random bike, found in a planter in downtown Davis
by my daughter. With the addition of a $5 mount (eBay), it works perfectly.

-- The wireless Cateye computer on my folding rando bike, found on the road by
me. I bought a $5 mount online, and paired it with a sending unit I already
had. Works perfectly.

-- My favorite cycling shoes, a pair of Specialized BG MTB-type shoes, bought
from a fellow local cyclist for $10. I originally planned to use them for wet
weather and muddy rides, but they became my favorite shoes, and have been on my
feet for an 1,100-mile ride from Santa Rosa to Seattle (www.wheelshorth.org),
several brevet series, and PBP in 2011.

So … what's your best deal ever?
