Most of my cycling purchases are thrifted. My best deals, though, have been the 
two bikes I bought at retail: my $1400 Quickbeam, and my $1400 Bontrager 
Privateer. 
The Privateer was on sale, after Trek retired the Bontrager bikes. It rode 
better for me than the Ibis Mojo, and exactly the same as an IF hardtail that 
cost twice as much. It's still a joy to ride. Maybe it planes, who knows.
The Quickbeam was exactly the bike I'd been waiting for (except I wanted more 
clearance). It's still the bike that is "my bike."

Actually, my wife's Trek Belleville was a great bargain at $250, since I traded 
the rest of the cost in design work. Her previous bike was $25, and she rode it 
A Lot. I sold it for $100. My low trail Ross was $25. Most free bikes I get 
involve some time and money invested, and then are given away to friends and 
neighbors who don't end up riding them...
