It's true the selection is limited, but a Pasela is a rather satisfactory tire, actually a good bit above "mostly basic" and the Pasela is available in 27 x 1 1/4". If you're looking for a cheap solution to keeping that good old bike on the road, it's a lot cheaper and easier to not replace the wheels -- until such a time as they actually need replacement.
