Back from the bike shop, where I purchased a set of 0.6mm shims ( 75 cents
a piece!). My past experience has been that this prevents the chain from
being sucked down between the middle and inner rings. My favorite mechanic
suggested a trick that should help with the gymnastics of holding all the
parts together during assembly. Put a bit of greese on the spacer to hold
it in place.

I run a 9 speed chain with a 9 speed cassette. I have never seen this
crank listed as 8 speed only.
