I've done the valve core insertion myself, with Slime. I just force the locknut off with pliers and let the core drop into the abyss of the tube -- it's easy enough to work it back up once you're done. Of course, if your tubes have removable cores, you are all set.
FWIW, I tried inserting Slime tin a small slit in the tube but never could keep the surface free of the gunk, and it absolutely repels patches. But here is my question: how do you get sealant (Stan's, fwiw) into a *tubular tire* that doesn't have removable valve cores? -- Particularly if the tires are narrow racing tires and too shallow to let the core drop fully into the carcase? It's largely this that is holding up the final build of my Ram -- while I wait for my brother to bring back an inexpensive set of clincher wheels from LA.
