Patrick, guess I got lucky with my Cyclotouriste. Never had a hitch with 
it, with a Shimano 600EX FD.  I did have to change my bottom bracket to get 
the chainline (to get the escape gear to clear the chainstay), and I used 
the SK 126mm.  Everything dialed right in on the first try, and never had 
an adjustment squirm.  

8.5mm sounds really really tight, because even the largest 9-speed chain is 
6.8mm - add the cage thickness, and that only gives you about 2mm 
adjustment freedom in the FD.  
OK, I started measuring gaps.  - my cyclotouriste has 10mm.  Even my Campy 
"10-speed" Centaur crank has a 12mm gap there.  

And here's the kicker.  My Nuovo Record crank would have 8.5 mm, but I have 
recent TA chainrings on it,and it has a 10mm gap between the chainring and 
the crankarm.
