After reading the other correspondence, including clarificatory and additional data from the initial poster, my suggestion is that he ought to get a good bike fit examination. I've never used Albatrosses, but from all I've read from maker/seller and users, they usually require a longer, and not a shorter stem.
Second: KOPS is a good starting point, but it is not at all a rule. Third: Jeff from Australia gives good advice. You might read the classic fit instructions on Peter Jon White's website (Google it). Lastly, there is much more involved in comfortable fit -- that is, one where your butt is comfortable on the saddle, your legs don't bog when pedaling, and your torso holds up your torso, bust, head, and shoulders comfortably so that you don't rely on your hands to hold you upright -- than merely sitting more upright. (And there is more than one way to get an upright postion, for that matter.) Again, I'd get the advice of a good fitter, or at least talk at length to someone at Rivendell about what is wrong with your present setup. An aside: I have long wondered if bolt upright positions, as on British bobby bikes and the Dutch utility bikes, are not as comfortable as they are because of the very shallow seat angle which allows high and close bars without sacrificing a physiologically necessary bend between hips and torso.
