In your situation (I've found myself there), it's hard to get rid of bikes. Not
much motivation. I usually need a flash of motivation to overcome me--not
because I'm so attached to the bike, but because I hate the whole process of
selling. I'm not in any way wealthy and could use every $$ coming my way. So if
the bike is of any real value, I like to sell it. But as long as the bike is
here with me and holds it's value (and I don't need immediate cash), that's a
wash in my book. So it's a stalemate and it usually hangs there until I get all
hopped up on another bike I want, or want to reclaim the space for something
else.

I will never ship a bike unless there is a good financial incentive. Too much
hassle. But for many bikes you and I might own, shipping is preferred because
we can't always find the right buyer locally who will pay its worth (and
appreciate the bike). So if it must be done…man, Is still hate to go there. CL
is a pita from spam and flake responses but I recently sold my fargo for a fair
price and have sold many bikes that way. Mostly what I like about it is that
it's local. The buyer sees what's he getting. No surprises, no ebay feedback
to worry about, cash on hand, etc. Sometimes you even make a new friend. No axe
murderers so far. ;)

If a bike has little money value and I know of someone who would benefit from
it, I give it away. I've given away a quite few bikes and helped neighbors
unload their unused bikes this way--fixing them up first to make them
safe/rideable. There's no bike co-op locally, I don't think. Goodwill rarely
knows what to do with a bike. We have a local charity that does a bike auction
once a year. That's a candidate for a donation. Last option, if the bike has
enough desirable bits and pieces mounted, I part out the bits I don't want,
keep the ones I do, and sell the frame. It's easier to ship this way and no
matter what the frame sells for, I usually make more cash this way.

Good luck!
