when I got my first 10-speed, my dad sold my Sears The Rail for $15 - 
they're selling for $1200 now.

Not that bikes are normally an investment - usually you can't get out of 
them what you put into them, but you can almost always improve them for 
less than the cost of a new bike - often much less.
