As a fellow sewer who has admittedly never made a bag from scratch (though I do love taking them apart and altering them), might I suggest the Denier Diamond Ripstop <http://www.seattlefabrics.com/nylons.html#Diamond Ripstop>from Seattle Fabrics?
Ripstop will give you the strength without the weight penalty of a thick coated Cordura, and with the benefit of being easier to sew, i.e. you can get away with using a 14. Or if you're after a lighter, laminated material, here's Dimension-Polyant 21<http://www.rockywoods.com/Fabrics-Kits/Dimension-Polyant-Fabrics/Terrain-X-Pac-Laminated-Ripstop-Fabric>, which is what Revelate uses for their frame bags.
