I can only speak of my track design, its different to others mainly because
I break the chain apart.

In my case I strip the lube off, obviously any lube will just pick up dirt
so didn't want that.

Regarding rust, not an issue for me, I remember when building the M41 track
I would deliberately sit the tracks on their sides in the kitchen sink to
encourage rust. Many photos of bulldogs show rust on the outer edge of the
track so thought to make it look realistic. I use an angle grinder a lot on
my tracks so any metal surface that has been exposed will develop rust
better, just saying I tried to make rust and don't really see it as a
concern unless you are dealing with extremes of moisture.

Only problem was that the rust would disappear when driven so rust seems to
be a non issue.

This is just from experience with my design, a complete roller chain system
could have other factors to consider so other peoples comments could shed
some light when using the complete chain.

My tracks are deliberately made to be loose/sloppy so rust will not make the
chain stick together as much as a complete roller chain would when rusty so
lubrication might be more important in that situation.

Driving in snow might also be a factor but considering the heat in Melbourne
atm probably not an issue.
