Or:

You could buy a hunting laser-rangefinder, open up the case and somehow wire
the electronics so that the computer relays the display infromation to a
receiver by a homemade transmitter so that the range can be seen on the
pilot's controller. That, combined with the infrared camera-operated
paintball marker hooked up to the portable tracking system, the tank could
simply stop at a desired location on the battlefield and initiate the
tracking system once completely stopped. You could also use a hand-held GPS
navigation system in the tank with a similar transmitter displaying the GPS
location on the pilot's digital map build into his controller--or perhaps on
his laptop screen with the tracking device's programme. Next you could add a
radar suite on top of the tank's turret with its own low-RPM motor to sweep
the area.

All that being said, your tank would be able to scan the perimeter and find
a target, lock onto it with the tracking programme, calculate the target's
range, and engage it if necessary.

Mike (who needs pilots anyway) M.
