My first advice is to go through all the tanks on the list at www.rctankcombat.com and see what the guys who have finished tanks have done. I still go back and look at them for inspiration and ideas. For motors, go to Ebay and type '350W motor' in the search block (or whatever power level you want)... you will get many many hits, with the prices starting around $25 each. Not too horrible.
Tank recommendation: Being that I'm still finishing my first tank, my advice is worth what you're paying for it... I advise against a Sherman (wierd back deck geometry tricky if you lack tools and experience). I advise something relatively blocky and easy to build, with decent interior space.
