If anyone tries this, get a shunt to measure current... don't do it directly, as most multimeters aren't rated for the kind of current that our motors can draw... I'd also recommend putting some kind of load on the motor, running a DC motor unloaded while testing overvoltage is a good way to explore the bad parts of a torque-speed curve and to test the mechanical limits of the rotor assembly. (I'm probably being too much of a mother hen with the last bits, but good engineering practice yadda yadda... pls forgive me :)
