Last time I checked, R2D2's don't run around on the rough terrain of a
battlefield, slam into obstacles, and try to shoot things accurately at
long distances.

Do a google search for r2 dome rotation for many videos and tutorials on
how this is accomplished with either a gear set or a friction wheel.
