Many smaller and especially VFD departments don't ventilate the roof, as
that is so dangerous and they have limited training time. The gables are
one option but it does depend on wind direction. Our favorite is CAFS foam
through a  gable vent. Positive pressure ventilation and blitz attacks can
also be used.
