Consumer reports has a review of refrigerators this month.
They focus on energy rating, quality, & lifespan. Our last ref {LG} only
lasted 8 years pretty sad for $2K in todays technology.

(Small clarification)* R600 is actually Isobutane, and if anyone wants me to
extol the virtues of these refrigerants for use in North America, don't stop
me from ranting. Europe has been using these (R600-R601 and other blends)
hydrocarbon based refrigerants for well over twenty years now with good
success. They are more environmentally benign as well.

Blomberg appliances offer full size AC fridges using 1.2A for the smaller
unit to 1.9A full size. Both have freezers. LED interior lightning and use
R600 which is alcohol. My clients LOVE these units and my batteries based
systems do too!

It's also worth mentioning SunDanzer; they has upright AC & DC fridges, plus
chest models. David Bergeron is very responsive & helpful.
While I agree w/ the advice for most people to go conventional & AC, there
is still a place for Sun Frost-like products. My SF RF-12 is still running
from 1984, & a SunDanzer freezer for at least 10 years now. DC can still
make sense in specific applications, & then, some of us still don't have an
always-on inverter. ;-)

I know this isn't what Will is looking for, but just in case anyone still
needs a 12/24vdc model frig, I got an ARB 60 qt at the beginning of the
summer, and it's been a champ. Especially for mobile applications, it
doesn't need to be level.
http://store.arbusa.com/Fridges-C11.aspx
Temp setable from zero up, I'm using it as a frig set at 33 degrees F. It's
been in a hot van running all summer, using about 100 to 150 watthrs per
day, less than rated, pulls about 3 amps at 12 volts. I tested out deep
freeze mode and it was closer to 400 wh/day, but starting with hot water and
freezing it solid. I really like the design of the ARB too. It's got good
dimensions for food and beverages. 90 beers!
I've got a 24v Novakool at home that's been running solid for about 15
years. But when it putters off for good I'm replacing it with an ARB...

Freezers are: Sears chest freezer with 2" of pink board foam glued to the
top & a 16 CuFt Sunfrost 24 VDC on an Iota power supply.

Subject: Re: [RE-wrenches] Off-grid refrigerator
Almost 25 years ago, when we built our off grid home, we looked at the
limited options then available one of which was the Sunfrost. After looking
into things like relative efficiency, initial purchase cost and system
requirements, it became pretty obvious that the Sunfrost was an overpriced
option that had too many problems. For half the cost we bought a Vestfrost
and then simply added a bit more generating capacity to our array at far
less than the difference in cost between the Vestfrost and the Sunfrost. It
was the best decision on appliances we ever made. The 120 vac Vestfrost was
a bit less efficient but since we were generating our own power that
difference was irrelevant as the cost to provide the necessary capacity to
handle the efficiency difference actually resulted in us saving money and
also gaining a very reliable appliance.
That was then and the Vestfrost was massively more efficient than the
standard refrigerators then available. Now, that model of Vestfrost is
nowhere near as efficient as the newest Energy Star compliant refrigerators
available at most appliance stores. Don't waste time or money searching for
another DC refrigerator, there simply isn't any benefit. It will be cheaper
to buy off the shelf and if you have to add a bit of generating capacity
getting another panel on your system will be way cheaper than than it was
for us back in the day...and back then it was still the better option.

Subject: [RE-wrenches] Off-grid refrigerator
Hello Off-grid Wrenches,
After 10+ years my Wife is finally sick of our Sunfrost RF-12. We'd like to
upgrade to something a little more modern that doesn't leak water all over
the floor when it's humid
For you off-grid installers what's your go to refrigerator recommendation?
I'm going to go through the energy star website but I thought I'd consult
with the experts too. I'd like to find something that has a form factor
similar to the Sunfrost although I know that's going to be hard to find.
Thanks,
Will White
