Sandra Herrera @ SE is out of the office this week. I am sure she will comment on this thread. For my clients in really remote places, they know they have to have a second independent power system and 2nd genset. They may not do it but they know from me telling them over and over.... Many older off-grid retirees need their oxygen concentrators, CPAP machines, other medical equipment, satphones and internet phones for check-ins with family. They are simply trying to live their lives to the fullest. Around here in NOCO it's almost always elk, deer and turkey hunting "cabins" (they range from very simple one-room to full-service, with extra wine fridge). My personal best -- Magnum tech support when I called from northern BC Canada. Had to hike a mile to get clear satphone. Honda 3000i not working with the small Magnum inverter/charger Explained problem, said "On satphone, I'm sitting here until you call me back, this is $1 a minute, and I'm watching grizzly bears on the trail below me." And got a callback from Magnum in 30 minutes. Not a solution, but an immediate and effective workaround. We eventually found the solution once I was back to normal phone service. Midnite Solar has also been similarly responsive when I have to drive to the top of a pass to have phone service, then drive back to the clients location, back and forth. These little tech support things make a big impact way off the grid, both for my bottom line and my client's well-being. AND, how I choose which equipment I install. We get the real installer perspective on equipment, not just the slick brochure. Poor tech support is not just a gripe, it is a potentially fatal problem for off grid clients going without power for weeks waiting for you to fix it.
