Hi All, I'm looking for anyone who has dealt with deeply discharged Powerwall 3 expansion packs.
I've inherited a job where another contractor put two PW3 units and six expansion packs (two systems) into a permanently off-grid home (in a bedroom closet, of all places). Predictably, Tesla has voided the warranty on the whole installation and refuses to provide any support. The serial numbers have been flagged in the system much like George Costanza's infamous Bathroom Book. All six expansion packs went offline about four months ago and were physically disconnected by someone else. When I reconnect them today, the system reports a CAN bus communication fault. My working diagnosis is that they've discharged below the point where they can wake themselves, and that the cells themselves may be fine. What I want to know is whether anyone has found a recovery path for a deeply discharged or nonresponsive expansion pack. Are there any tricks to wake them up? The reason I'm chasing it is that these are six units that go to scrap otherwise. If they can be brought back, they're perfectly good hardware for a normal grid-tied install. The two Powerwall 3 units themselves are still functional and can be removed and used in a grid-tied system, albeit without warranty or service coverage. I'm not looking to keep the unapproved system running. The whole thing is coming out and being replaced with equipment that's actually designed for off-grid use. I just want a shot at salvaging the batteries. Thanks, Jason Szumlanski Florida Solar Design Group
