I tried to ping to test the web connection, but that would make it look like the app is calling home without permission. Any suggestions?
I don't think anyone would think your app is phoning home via a ping. Also, your computer uses pings all the time for things without you knowing, so one or two extra wouldn't hurt.
Alternatively, try doing a DNS lookup using Network.LookupXXXXXX. If that is successful, you can pretty much assume you've got a valid connection. Of course, there is still the issue of your router caching the address, so ping is the ideal way.
