There is a tendency among people, not just on this list, but still
markedly so here too, not to manifest any interest until the goods are
materially visible/available; be it beta software, meetings or else.
Most people are ready to consume, but few roll up their collective
sleeves to help kick-start a project.

I do agree with Phil that cost *is* an issue, especially for – but not
restricted to – us Europeans. As I mentioned some time before RW 2006,
between the actual cost of the conference, the plane ticket, the visa
costs [and the time frame; these days it takes 4 months to get an
interview at the US Embassy in Paris, and the costs are around
150$...] and other expenses, my budget was close to the cost of a
DualCore PowerMac. G5, but still. In the early stages of the first RW,
and possibly of the second edition, I mentioned to the people in
charge back then that a large city closer to the US water fronts, like
SF, NYC or other hubs, would have been a better choice in terms of a
location if RS wanted to attract foreign attendees, as there are more
flights – and thus cheaper flights. I am happy to see that a few
years later other people are making the same proposal, and I hope
they'll have more success than I had...

However, with the creation of a European branch of RS, we may start
dreaming of a Euro-RealWorld or similar RS-initiated meeting. I am
sure that between RS's own staff and other Europe-based RS clients,
there is enough talent to organize regular meetings somewhere in
Europe, maybe even on a rotating basis, depending on the percentage of
active customers in a country [I'd guess Germany would be somewhere
near the top, along with the UK...]. Same goes for RS China, I am sure
that an Asian meeting could be workable for them – albeit maybe not
their priority.

I for one would gladly join such meetings – possibly both as an
attendee and a trainer – and could help with the organisation, as I
have quite some experience with organizing such events. But I guess
we'll have to wait and see what happens with RB Europe first!
Likewise, as I am half of the time in Asia, should a conference be
organised in China/Asia – and held in English! – I would probably
attend.
