Why re-invent the wheel ??
Take a look at the proxies in Linux, they are all open source.
There are even distro's that do nothing but router/proxy. You can boot
them from a Live CD.
I use IPCOP, which is a nice thing as a personal firewall / proxy.
(I did install it to HD)
