I like the idea of being able to enter and exit this mode
conveniently. However I would worry that this particular UI design
would make it very easy to do extensive damage to your code without
realizing it, just as a side effect of playing with the sticky button
and typing. I dont have a better design to propose, but I would try to
make it explicit -- using words -- at the very least.
