Hi David,
Indeed I also moved from RealBasic 5.5 and have the same positive
experience like you. I am using RealBasic 2006 version 2 on a Siemens
Mobile A which is a Pentium III / 1 Ghz computer together with Windows
2000 Professional.
Despite the fact you have to get used to the new user-environment of
RealBasic 2006, RealSoftware did an excellent job. You can have several
projects open at once. In the user-environment your windows and classes
are placed in tab-panels. And the use of mySQLlite as standard is a very
big improvement.
Also the possibility to compile for 3 different platforms (Macintosh -
Windows - Linux) with one source project is very valuable. And when the
powerfull capabilities of RealBasic itself is not enough for you, you
can write your own plugins and classes or buy them from Einhugur (who
deliver quality plugins).
I can only advise people who currently use RealBasic 5.x to upgrade to
RealBasic 2006. It is well worth the effort and the price paid.
One last thing, I have also a Pentium III 550 which I installed
RealBasic 2006 first. Despite the fact you can use RealBasic 2006
together with a Pentium III / 550, you have to be a little more patient.
It is therefore that I use the Siemens Mobile A instead of the Pentium
III/550.
About the shortcomings from RealBasic. There is always someting to wine
or moan on if you want. However when something is not possible in one
way, with a little bit of creative thinking and an open mind you will
find a workaround so you can implement your original idea. Programming
is all about creativity, an open mind for the unexpected and thinking
differently.
And to be really succesfull I can recommend two books to you :
1. RealBasic Cross-Platform Application Development
Author : Mark S. Choate
ISBN : 0-672-32813-5
Releasedate : april 2006
Covers RealBasic 2005
Price : $49.99 USA / $66.99 CAN / £35.99 UK
2. RealBasic The Definitive Guide
Author : Matt Neuburg
ISBN : 1-56592-657-9
Releasedate : somewhere in 1999 - update version around 2002
Covers RealBasic 2 and the later version covers 3.5.1
Regretfully this book is completely out of print.
Price : $29.95 USA / $43.95 CAN / £16.95 UK
The first two prices are from the book, the last UK price is the one you
pay now by Amazon.co.uk.
Both books are complementary to each other inspite the fact that the
second book is outdated. When you are new to RealBasic you should try to
find both books. In some fields like sound, music and colors, Matt
Neuburgs book is much more detailled. Mark S. Choate gives many very
detailled and clear explanations. The use of OOP and classes alone is
wotth the price of the book.
Be creative!!!
Friendly greetings,
Bad_Wolf
