To RS's credit, that would be a fatal mistake. RB SQL Server doesn't bring a
lot to the table except enhanced integration with REALbasic. That's a very
nice feature of course, and that gives them a little more leverage vs
Filemaker, where ease-of-use is the #1 feature.

If RS doesn't update for themselves the drivers to integrate with mySQL,
Postgre and Oracle, then they would be painting themselves into a corner
business-wise. They MAY be tempted to shunt out other dbs in order to
enhance sales of REAL SQL Server, but that would be a critical mistake. I
can tell you what the results would be for that -

-Anyone who buys based on name (mySQL, MS SQL Server, Oracle) will drop RB.
Those companies are generally too big to give REAL any help anyway. Don't
expect Larry Ellison to be jumping up and down in frustration ;-)

-Anyone who buys a special market database, such as Valentina, Openbase or
others that support plugins to REALbasic on their own dime would simply
either build their own IDEs or throw their weight 100% behind other players.
I know from my own experience that there have been a lot of Macromedia
Director users who have tried REALbasic because Valentina supports it.

In the case of Valentina, we try to support all market players (based on
size or on partnership) and try to include the IDE specific features that
are in demand - in REAL's case, our classes based API and also RBDB API
support. So we will figuratively sleep with any IDE vendor, do bundles, etc,
so long as they stay friendly or represent a truly huge bank of existing
(and potential) customers. For example, Valentina sells well to REALbasic
developers, but the Director business (with all the ups and downs there)
far, far outclasses the RB market in terms of total volume, support of
Shockwave and the like.
