Yep, that's exactly right. There are a lot of Next refugees at
Apple and so even Apple doesn't always provide a good Mac
experience. :-)
Very few files created in OS X 10.3 and higher have type or creator
codes. Take a look at the PDF files created by/for Preview as an
example... it is part of the OS X experience to allow users to change
the default programs (creator) in "Get Info" instead. I don't care
if you agree with Apple's current policy or not, the fact is that
Apple has given in to the file extension as the most widely accepted
file identification method. Granted, when a file has a Type and
Creator, it trumps the file extension... and that just makes it more
confusing for new users.
OSX is NOT the epitome of an ideal Mac experience. :-)
I think that the problem is that REALbasic assumes that any new file
would be a TEXT file, and in the modern OS X age this is an incorrect
assumption. I would much rather have REALbasic use NULL type and
creator codes.
I would prefer that REALbasic treats file extensions as full first
class file type identifiers just like Apple does.
