Yep, that's exactly right. There are a lot of Next refugees at
Apple and so even Apple doesn't always provide a good Mac
experience. :-)
Very few files created in OS X 10.3 and higher have type or creator
codes. Take a look at the PDF files created by/for Preview as an
example... it is part of the OS X experience to allow users to
change the default programs (creator) in "Get Info" instead. I
don't care if you agree with Apple's current policy or not, the
fact is that Apple has given in to the file extension as the most
widely accepted file identification method. Granted, when a file
has a Type and Creator, it trumps the file extension... and that
just makes it more confusing for new users.
OSX is NOT the epitome of an ideal Mac experience. :-)
I think that the problem is that REALbasic assumes that any new
file would be a TEXT file, and in the modern OS X age this is an
incorrect assumption. I would much rather have REALbasic use NULL
type and creator codes.
I would prefer that REALbasic treats file extensions as full first
class file type identifiers just like Apple does.
I should send some flowers to you!
The FileType and Creator is gone......
Just my application works with the web... and I cant use the Mac
FileType to filter OpenDialogs or File Listboxes, not for text file
or images, then i get a lot of 'bug report' on my app.
