Thanks to all for the suggestions... I'm not at work today but will work on it more tomorrow...

It should not be the cable, i was told the cable I was given is straight through not Null Modem and the equipment manufacturer said that is what I needed...

BTW the cable is DB-9 , female on both ends. Maybe it's not what I was told or is bad? Don't have a brakeout box but I can get my hands on a meter.
