Part of your reasoning was the bottom line. Lets say you sell to 200
clients, at $500 USD per client
That's $10000 USD to develop a Mac Postgres Installer, which could
then be given back to the postgres community. If the installer was
written with RB then that would be a great advertisement for RB as
well.
For each client thereafter you can decide where the extra $500 USD
goes.
Yep - right on the money. It would cost us money/time to develop a
postgres installer that I could give back to the postgres community.
Which would be generous thing to do and it may be a great
advertisement for RS. However, for us at least, we need to focus our
efforts on our app and let the back end database take care of itself.
We have been working on this app for close to 4 years - during our
research phases, we have tried many different databases - so we have
a tremendous amount of experience installing, configuring and
supporting them.
We also didn't want to have to rely on third party software -
installers, gui tools, debuggers, configurators etc* - to support our
app. We wanted single source for all of that.
If something goes wrong, or a bug is uncovered, I don't want to have
to go to RS and have them say that it's a third party plug in issue,
then to have the third party developer say it's a database issue,
then to have the database community say it's an RS issue. Anybody
been there? We have - it's frustrating and a huge time-waster. If
something goes wrong with RS/RSSQLS, I have a single point of contact.
Which is why we selected the REALSQLServer - point and click. Done.
The whole idea for us is that we want to spend a minimal amount of
time/effort on a back-end SQLServer and spend a maximum amount of
time on our app.
As a testament, we have had REALSQLServer in our beta sites for close
to 6 months - and honestly close to zero down time. We found a couple
of database bugs early on which have been fixed. We haven't had a
tech support call in > 45 days. Which means we are maximizing profit.

*We also felt that OpenBase and Valentina offer very good installers
and GUI tools.
