On my OS X 10.4.8 PPC, very little shows in my /tmp directory unless I type in CMD SHIFT G and "/var" and inside that is the "/tmp" folder with all the stuff. Just using the /tmp only shows me about 6 items and no folders.501. The /tmp and /var look like alias records to point to themselves within the private directory. The full path on mine looks like: /private/var/tmp/folders.501/TemporaryItems Maybe you can copy and paste that into the Finder's GO prompt to get there. I have a cron set to delete the contents in the wee hours, anyone got an Applescript that would do the same (I tried but it turns out I'm apple script challenged).
