Didn't TinkerTool for OS X allow us to hide and show all the little hidden
places? That's the friendly way to do it I think. Not sure OS X has any
other way to do it.

If you run Terminal, you can type CD / to get to the root directory on your
HD and then LS to get a listing of all the folders and files. After that,
it's just a path or a lot of CD's to get to the folder you want (CD=change
directory).
